Colorado Springs might not be a safe place to live if you work at a convenience store, but if you’re a kid, you’ve got it made — at least as far as Men’s Health magazine is concerned.
Men’s Health announced its list of America’s “Safest Cities for Children” today, and Colorado Springs came in at No. 8 out of 100, and ended up with a B+ grade. Madison, Wis., was No. 1; Jacksonville, Fla., landed at the bottom of the list.
The magazine based its rankings on the accidental death rates for children ages 5 to 14; the number of car-seat inspection locations per child/per state; the number of sex offenders per capita; the percentage of abused children protected from further abuse; and the strength of child-restraint and bike-helmet laws.
So does Colorado Springs deserve this ranking? Do you even think lists like this have any merit? Share you thoughts.

This story is very ironic. How safe is the city for children when the parks they play in are neglected and dangerous. You might want to look at the case of Doris Priest. My good friend is a small 52 year old woman. Last spring she needed a little relaxtion and went to the Golden Hills Park to relax and swing. Evidently because of the Cities neglect, the bolt holding the swing up broke. She, being up in the air, had a severe injury of her hands, shoulder and spine. Through her lawyer, she asked the city for assistance in paying her deductible on her medical bills. This injury caused severe financial hardship for her. All she initially asked for was her deductible of 5000.00 dollars. After much litigation the city is now suing her for their legal fees of 18,000 dollars. This on a person who truly suffered great hardship from their neglect.
So…. safe city for kids?
Perhaps after all the budget cuts, the city should post signs at the city parks, “Enter at own risk, the City of Colorado Springs is not maintaining this playground !” Please contact me if you would like more information on this story.
